In addition to the 3000 souls that lost their lives that day, some of whom were friends, there were and are many others who have developed cancers from the toxic air 10 and 20 years later. These individuals, some first responders and others, workers and residents, were encouraged to return to work and/or to remain in their downtown neighborhoods . This encouragement was voiced by the head of the EPA, Christine Todd Whitman, presumably at the behest of her boss, President Bush. One of the people who developed cancer was my daughter, who received monies from the Victims Compensation Fund, which while welcome, did not comfort her, her small children, her husband and her parents for her untimely death from blood cancer in 2020.
